AT & T

I've got a project to do.

Either tonight or tomorrow I'm switching out my broadband connection. I've had Roadrunner for several years and it works fine. But.

But I don't have cable, I have satellite. However to get Roadrunner I have to pay for nasty cable even though I'm not using it.

So recently AT&T finally allowed coverage to my area and I quickly signed up for it. It's only going to cost a quarter of what I had been paying through Time Warner.

I just hope that it works. I don't have a whole lot of faith in AT&T.

We've had to use AT&T DSL for over a year and a half now...never an issue with them. Well, other than when our router croaked, but that wasn't their fault. We just went to Best Buy, got another one, and an AT&T rep on the phone talked the Spouse Thingy through setting it up.

$35 a month...when we had cable, it was over $100...

Here we have either cable or verizon... verizon is awful. Cable is better... at least our house is hardwired all over so I have one cable modem attached in the smart box and an instant secure network in the house. We can share folders and printers and I can send pics from the Mac to the PC and back again.

My favorite system was in Mississippi... we had "ADSL" and I don't know what that meant but the internet was into any room with a phone jack... it wasn't wireless, just used the existing phone lines. Somehow it was faster and more reliable than straight DSL.

you've been one busy man: hiking (hanging rock is beautiful), inner tubing, kayaking, working, getting new internet service and kissing pretty puppies. you new kayak is really nice looking for it's age. how'd it do on the water? have a great day.

Now the pipeline is looking a lot more like a pipeline because there's a few miles of pipe laying about. Natural Gas Pipeline The next step is when they weld all the pipes together. One of the workers told me that they do this above ground so that the welds can be inspected by x-rays before they lay the pipeline into the ground. I guess you would want to be damn sure about how well the pipes are connected once you start pushing natural gas through them. Big booms are expensive and, given that the pipeline runs right behind my house, unhealthy. Because of all the safety aspects of this phase of the work, it's going to take them 2 months before they're ready to lower the pipes into the ground. Until then, lots of dust and from time to time, mud too.

dogs and cancer

Like the old commercials for Fruit Loops, a Kelloggs' breakfast cereal , would say: "A nose, it always knows". While that commercial was referring to Toucan Sam, I'm just using this as a lead in to talk about how sensitive dog noses are and how they can be used, perhaps, to detect cancer. There have been a number of mentions of this in the media recently. Here's two items from CBC news this year. One story that ran on 60 Minutes and another from the Early Show . Both of these stories refer to a study run by Dr. Bob Gordon of the Scripts Clinic in La Jolla which used urine samples of cancer patients and healthy people to determine how well dogs could detect differences in odor between the two. That study resulted in the conclusion that a trained dog could detect cancer to a degree that was 3 times greater than could be accounted for by mere chance. Pretty good but not great. Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together.
