Time for a new Camera

Image
I have two digital cameras that I use all the time. They are both Panasonics from the DMC-FZ line, models 7 and 8. I keep the older one, which I bought on April 11, 2006 , in my lab at work and use it to image Western gels. The newer one, bought on December 18, 2007 , is my constant companion. Both of these cameras have primarily been used to take photographs outside when I'm either hiking or kayaking. As a result both have been dunked in lakes and rivers on a number of occasions while kayaking. That's what caused me to buy the second camera---the first one was having a lot of trouble focusing after one of the dunkings. And another source of annoyance for the cameras is my hiking with them in my hand while sweat trickles down my arm onto them. All that salty water isn't good for cameras and that's what has finally caused my second camera to get ill. Often it won't turn off and I have to take the battery out to get it to power down. Other times it won't turn on n...

Toys in the mail

Image
I received two items in the mail today that I can play with. One is a toy in the traditional sense whereas the other is more a metabolic toy. The metabolic toy is a test package of Align that an ad agency sent me. I'm supposed to use it and review what I think of it on my blog here. The package consists of a bottle of 28 capsules of Align, which are taken once a day, and contain 4 milligrams of Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 each and a manual and diary for its use. The odd thing is that according to the cover letter from Bridge Worldwide there's supposed to be a 2 month supply of tablets but there's only 28 pills. To the best of my mathmatical ability I can't figure how 28 once-a-day tablets will last for 8 weeks. Maybe this is where Jesus comes in with the fish and loaf of bread. I've had IBS symptoms since I was in my early 20s so it'd be great if Align would diminish them somewhat. I'm not overly optimistic since my IBS seems to occur almost as often in...

shopping for a camera?

Image
I watched a DVD last night and also saw last night's episode of The Amazing Race. I really liked the movie. I was quite disappointed in the outcome of TAR. More about that later... I really like my Panasonic DMC - FZ 7 camera. I bought it a year ago soon after it was introduced. As you can probably guess by that time span, Panasonic is now releasing the update, the Lumix DMC - FZ 8. This means that there's clearance sales around on the FZ 7 and if you're in the market for a good 12X zoom digital camera --and don't want an SLR-- this is a great buy. There's one site I found ( Vanns .com) that has it priced at $230. Hell, the lens is worth more than that! And isn't it pretty? I like the way the SLRs look more but there's a couple of features of SLRs that I dislike enough to keep me from buying one. First, I don't like having to open the camera up, and possibly letting dust in, while changing lens and secondly, I really like having a live preview on the...
