T-Bone

No, not the steak. The oil guy. T. Boone Pickens , I mean. I watched 60 Minutes tonight and the middle segment was on Pickens and it was aired mainly due to The Pickens Plan , a controversial plan that T Boone is pushing for the supposed goal of making the USA energy independent. His plan is to use more natural gas which we produce domestically as well as make a huge capital expenditure to create a network of wind turbine farms stretching in the midwest from the border of Mexico to the border with Canada. Some, maybe much, of that land aquired by eminent domain. I was hoping that there'd be more information on the Pickens Plan on the 60 Minutes segment but the piece focused pretty much on what T. Boone wanted to say rather than an objective critique of the plan. I personally think it's worth one hell of a lot of money for our country to become independent from Middle East oil but I just don't know if the Pickens Plan is practical or just a ruse to further line the multi-bil...

Carrots and Oil but not Lasagna

I was going to make another batch of lasagna this weekend but I might postpone that a few days. Having eaten a large casserole dish of lasagna over the past week, I'm a little burnt out on the stuff. Maybe next Tuesday or Wednesday I'll try out a slightly different variation on the lasagna theme. In the meantime I think I'll go for something a lot lighter. Carrots! Brown-sugar Glazed Carrots 4 cups sliced carrots 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter You steam the carrots for about 6 minutes using a few tablespoons of water in the microwave. In the last half minute of cooking time, melt the butter and brown sugar together in the dish. Remove from microwave and toss the cooked carrots with the butter/sugar mixture. Carrots and dill are in the same family and make a perfect combination. I'm going to try sprinkling fresh dill leaves over carrots before steaming them. I've never done that before and I might not like it. :-( Now onto the "oil" sectio...

artic land grab and huntington's disease

There's an International war going on and it's SURPRISE north of us-- not in the Middle East. This war is still over oil and natural gas--no surprise there--but at least this time there's no bullets, just lawyers and scientists with the UN having ultimate control over the decision. There's the story over on the left. If it's too small to read, just click on it to make it bigger. Magic! Apparently there's lots of petro type resources under the Bering Sea as well as the ocean floor beneath the polar region north of Alaska and Siberia. And that's a little sticky legally because under the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention , coastal states can claim the seabed beyond those economic zones, if they can show it connects to the continental shelf on which they are located. In this particular case, the coastal states in question are Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States. They all have territory with the Arctic Circle so each controls an economic zone in t...
