Officially Old

I think I had a post by this title earlier but if so, it bears repeating. This time the diagnosis of old-ness is due to my ophthalmologist telling me that I now need bifocals. The trouble spot where I can't focus is pretty far out still but no doubt as I get older it'll get closer and closer. *sigh* The infirmities of age.

I've been rather quiet of late due to working longer hours than usual and being sick with a cold. Yesterday I was doing surgeries on mice for over 3 hours and thought I was going to die near the end. Yes, I'm being dramatic but I really was getting desperate for something to drink near the end. The end! Having a sore throat isn't good when you can't de-glove for a few hours.

On the Christmas front, I've still not bought a single present. It's getting close to crunch time! I wonder if it's permissible to just hand out IOUs?

Addendum: several people here have suggested getting the progressive (no lines) type lenses for my glasses and I can assure y'all that is what I ordered. Due to the upcoming holidays, I won't receive them until after January 1st. I'm told it takes some time to get used to them---something else to look forward to!

LOL. This post is a mess! I'm sure you'll fix it in time....

My glasses are 2 years old -- my first pair of bifocals. I've finally gotten to where I don't get nauseous walking around in them but now it's time to have them replaced. I'm not seeing so well these days.

I hope you feel better soon. The presents have to be bought, Dave. IOUs aren't acceptable at Christmas without a REALLY good reason -- a cold and mice surgery won't cut it. {sigh}

I have had the no line bifocals for 18 months. At first i hated them, they gave me a headache so i went back to my old glasses. The last 6 months saw me go to the bifocals again, but my eyes in the reading dept have deteriorated even more so now i need new bi focals again LOL!!

I've had progressives for 3 years and I'm still not used to them... Now I just read with my face 2 inches from the monitor, over the upper edge of my glasses...it's easier than trying to see through the freaking glasses.

I have bifocals ..and I hate them..my wee brain cant switch between the two different strengths..
so i end up wearing my old single lens glasses..
or just squint :(

Progressives can be a challenge - good luck with that!

Getting older stinks, but it beats dying. Aren't I a bucket of cheer? :)

Sounds like one of those inevitable milestones on the journey we all take along with first grey hair.

As for the shopping, I thought all men left buying presents until Christmas Eve? ;)

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
