snake in the leaves

I took this picture 8 days ago when I was on a hike at Morgan Creek. I thought I had posted the picture at that time--but when I went to show the picture to a co-worker, it turns out I was wrong. *gasp*

So here's my snake picture. He was good sized and while snakes don't bother me, in this case I never got closer than 5 feet away. He looked a mite pissy and even non-poisonous snakes can bite.

What kind of snake? Do you know? I've never seen a blue snake in these parts!
Wow - he's a beauty. He does look a little pissy. But he sat pretty for his pic. :-)

It looks kind of cottonmouth-y, but this site makes it look more like a banded water snake. Still not something I'd want to meet unawares.

I'm terrible at figuring out what species a critter is, Kristen. I'm lucky when I can identify fellow humans. All the snakes on that page look different to me. I'd have never known they were all members of the same species. :-(
