Deja Vu

Deja Vu is a 2006 movie starring Denzel Washington as ATF agent Doug Carlin. I watched it last night and I was quite impressed.

The plot isn't easy to describe and I won't even take a stab at it. This is all due to a time travel aspect which makes all the action quite convoluted and often events aren't actually progressing like you think they are. It's a good idea to pay attention to details early in the movie! What I can describe is the basic set up which initiates the sequence of events that change Doug Carlin's life.

At the start of Deja Vu, a ferry filled with Navy crewmen and their families is blown up in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. ATF agent Carlin is brought in to investigate the explosion and gets attached to an experimental federal surveillance unit, one that uses technology to directly look back a little over four days into the past. Carlin has the good taste to fall in love with Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton) and that's what pushes the plot.

The premise behind the movie is as ridiculous as it is scary--but never mind that, once you accept the premise the rest of the movie is thrilling and thought provoking. Many ethical issues are joined and you'll be pondering the implications as you're enjoying the trials and tribulations that Denzel is going through. Just in case Washington isn't enough eye candy for the ladies, they also have Val Kilmer in a supporting role as FBI Agent Pryzwarra. Fortunately they didn't leave the male demographic high and dry, Paula Patton is very easy on the eyes! That's her over there on the left.

It's very rare to see such a difficult plot device like time travel used so well. Many of the negative reviews of this movie--and there are many--find fault with the way the movie uses this to move the plot. I completely disagree. Deja Vu rocks--and it does so because of the many ripples that are caused by Denzel's pursuit of a dead woman.

There was very little in this movie that was predictable though I was worried near the end. It looked very much like it was heading towards a pat ending and while I was disappointed I still was happy with the movie--but they surprised me again. The ending was one I liked but didn't see coming. Neat.

I liked the movie so much I'll probably watch it again in a few weeks.

I just watched this a few weeks ago. I liked it too. Although, I wanted to know how they were going to arrest the guy for a crime that he hadn't committed yet.

It is the little things that get me.

Utenzi: There wasonce a Julie Andrews/Lack Lemmon comedy released that no one saw. So it was re-released. I saw it twice. Glad you enjoyed it despite critics.

Dave, I would watch Denzel washington in ANYTHING!! He is so gorgeous. Have you ever read the Alex Cross series by James Patterson? Whenever I read one, I picture Denzel as Alex Cross. When the first movie came out, they had another actor in the role - and it made me mad it wasn't Denzel!!

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
