walking across campus

On Sunday my girlfriend and I decided to do some walking for exercise and to look at the lovely scenery that a blustery day in early March so readily provides. LOL Well, this might not be the best time of the year for scenery but we dressed warm--it was 40f and very windy--so it wasn't so bad.

We first went to UNC in Chapel Hill since I had to drop off some things at my lab. We parked on one end of campus--and parking was already becoming difficult due to a HUGE basketball game being played later that day. The game was between the UNC Tarheels and their crosstown arch rivals the Duke University Blue Devils. In the spirit of things, after Ren and I walked across the campus of UNC, we drove over to Durham and walked around on the Duke campus. Ren, being a UNC grad, shivered a bit here and there. I think it was the prospect of actually walking in the land of the damned--but maybe it was just the blustery wind.

Here's a picture of a duck we came across in the Sarah Duke Gardens. For some reason that duck seemed to like me and, as you can see in this picture, was even flirting with me at times. Ren didn't like that much and hustled me away. LOL I suspect Ren will inform me, after reading this post, that all this happens solely in my mind. Silly Ren.

By the way, the Tarheels ended up whipping Blue Devil butt later that day, 86-72. Go Heels! That win pushed UNC up to #1 in the ACC seedings.

The picture below shows how some of the bulbs are starting to come up. Not many yet, but in a few weeks the Garden will be just splendid--right now it's a mite plain and drab though. Mostly just pansies are out with a few bulbs showing their faces. I have some so-so pictures of crocuses. I'll post one or two of those tomorrow.

I have no idea what kind of duck this is... do you? I guess it is the remnants of a Zoology major that pushes me to identify every bird and animal..

Now it is cold again and they are forecasting snow, again... I will believe it when I see it on the ground.

On Sat., my boss had 2 weddings at Duke chapel and one of the receptions was at the Carolina Inn. I didn't know about the game, but I wondered why there was so much traffic on 15-501. The area was extremely crowded with cars!

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
