television roundup
Here's a brief break from serious science posts. Let's talk some television.
I watched a show last week that was dreadful. It was originally supposed to show in the Fall but kept getting bumped. The name is The Knights of Prosperity and the episode I saw was so bad that I immediately deleted the show from my recording list. I didn't want to take a chance on seeing another episode by accident. It was that bad.
Last night I watched a half hour show on Steve Irwin that's named Crikey, What An Adventure! I'd recorded from Animal Planet on Sunday. It's being played a bunch of times this month along with Ocean's Deadliest, the special that Irwin was in the process of filming at the time of his death. I'll watch Ocean's Deadliest tonight and expect that it'll be quite interesting albeit sad since we won't be seeing anything new from Steve though it does seem like Bindi, his daughter, will be getting a lot of exposure.
A week and a half ago CBS officially announced the teams for the All-Star edition of The Amazing Race. No doubt I'll watch the first few episodes but most of the teams don't interest me. Team Guido is great even if just to be the villians of the series and I do like Rob and Amber even if nobody else on the planet does. He's so gung-ho and competitive that I find him charming in a very negative way. Along that vein, I was really hoping that Colin would be in the show. No dice tho.
Uchenna & Joyce would be the "nice team" that I hope will win. After them it'd probably be Kevin & Drew. If several of these teams drop out I'll probably stop watching. I really can't stand Charla & Mirna and watching them will be painful and something that will be easy to stop recording.
I woke up a few hours early on Saturday before going to the Science Blogging Conference and used that time to finish reading Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma. I was quite impressed with it and will write it up later this week. I liked it so much that I'm going to buy the previous book he wrote (The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World).
UPDATE: JerseyDude likes Knights of Prosperity and says it's gotten some good reviews so maybe some of you will like it. God help you!
