hot, hot, hot

I desperately need air conditioning! The A/C here at work hasn't worked well this year and right now they're tearing it apart so it hasn't been on for the past week.

It's over 90f outside here and around 88 in here in the lab. I'm dying! My work requires RNA free conditions which means gloves at all times and often a mask as well. It's amazing how much warmer you get when you put latex gloves on. *whew*

When I get home I'm just going to lay down under a ceiling fan with the A/C on high! *sigh* At least until I have to go outside and mow the lawn...

I don't envy your stifling conditions, although in upstate NY, hardly anything but stores and workplaces are airconditioned it seems. Our poor kids go the last month to school in steamy conditions, most houses have no a/c--except mine--and even church on Sunday morning requires sleevless shirts. We've had our share of 90+ weather already, although today it is in the high 70s. Thanks for checking out my blog.

Living near Houston, TX, I feel your pain...and your humidity! Our heat was quelled by a big dousing of rain, but that won't hold us for long.

I have been here before awhile back, but didn't realize you were from NC. I was born there and have always wanted to go back as I moved when I was very young.

You poor thing!! Those conditions require combat pay, don't they?? I don't know how you can do any research in that heat - it is awful here this week!

One year in Connecticut I lived in a 3rd floor walk up with no air conditioning. I decided to "work with my hands" for the summer and was landscaping - ack! That was hot and humid! I would come home and shower then lay down on the bed without even toweling off, letting the fan air dry me and lower my body temp. I do sympathize. Michele says hi.

I don't do too well with that level of heat. It seems hard to imagine right now though. It's about 2 degrees here (around 35 Fahrenheit), raining hard and there is possible snow forecast.

Oh, I feel for you. We only had a couple of 85 -90 degree days thus far, but they were tough.

This would be the time to hire some HS kid during the summer to mow your lawn. Put out a $20 bill, a couple bottles of water, and watch the kid sweat from the window of your AC'd living room...:)

Oh how HORRIBLE!! Gosh, I can't imagine going for a week in the south with no a/c during the summer. Those are truly Prisoner of War conditions... hope you're feeling much cooler today!!

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
