It's a 60's thing

I mentioned this bug in a post a few days ago. I've named the pictures "rocker-bug" because for some odd reason the close ups of the face remind me of some rock singer from one of those critter named groups back in the 60s. The Beatles, Animals, Trogs, Crickets, et cetera. Maybe it reminds me of all of them! Be sure to click on the picture to get a nice close-up view!


In a very odd, offbeat way it's cute. However I'm very glad it's only an inch or two long. Something like this that was a few feet long would really be a nightmare--or that fellow your daughter at college is seeing and that she just insists you'll love. LOL

I can just see it: Mom, meet Edgar. Just feed him sugar water. Go light on the pesticides.

In case you want more info, in this first picture he's snacking on nectar. His proboscis, or whatever it's called, is down inside the flower.




This is a side shot taken the next day. It might be Edgar, or maybe a sibling. I didn't want to ask. You know he'd just get upset and insist that to me they all look the same. I don't know about you--but I hate getting attitude from bugs! It reminds me of that giant bug in that Men in Black movie. *squish*






Here's a side view on a flower. Notice how different it looks from the side. A lot less similarity to Edgar, your soon to be son-in-law, from this angle.














I don't know what that yellow thing is under Edgar (or his Sister) and I strongly suspect I don't want to know! I didn't notice it when I took the picture--and it gives me the heebie jeebies to think about it now!

Wow, *awesome* photos. I love taking pictures of bugs and have posted tons on Flickr--I know how difficult it can sometimes be to get a good shot, with the lighting and the bug's movements and all those wildly unpredictable factors. These are great shots!

HAHAHA We have them too! I don't know what they are though. I DID see this posted somewhere (& I can't remember where or I'd give creit!) & thought you'd like it, after the Katydid thing.... http://www.whatsthatbug.com/ Go check them out, they have some FUNKY creatures on there. BTW, just in case you don't see it on my blog, My Mom isn't any kid...she's old, she just turned 30! :)

They also had scary movies in the 60s about bugs that had gotten huge...like Mothra and the Ants! Remember the Fly? Michele sent me today.

This bug (it's a kind of fly or dragonfly, isn't it?) reminds me of a muppet, but I can't remember which one.

Oh, they are all pictures of Edgar, he has such distinct markings and his siter is rather camera-shy. Don't ask me how I know this - the answer would scare you, and surprise me, since I have yet to make one up.

He does look cute in a large-eyed, if he was a Disney creation kind of way. Now the question becomes: who would do his voice?

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
