Half-blood Prince on the Deck


Just reading out on the back deck this afternoon. It's in the low '80s and I have the shade drawn over the deck to keep it from getting too hot.

I've finally gotten around to reading the latest Harry Potter book and have got about 100 pages to go. So far it's been pretty good. Very much in keeping with the rest of the series. It's good to see that the extra time between books isn't hurting Rowling's concentration and focus. Celebrity has screwed up many an author in the past!

Back to the book...

Rowling seems like a pretty down to earth person no matter how rich and famous she gets. When I grow up, I want her royalty check ;)

That's how it was for me also, TJ. I ordered it prepublication so I had it a few days after release and it's been sitting on a shelf for nearly 2 months since. Amazingly enough I've managed to avoid hearing who died though I've always had suspicions and the mystery about the title hasn't been solved yet but I think that was obvious years ago when the title was first mentioned--but I could be wrong. Dammit.

In the 6th book, a lot of info about the past is revealed. Now I can't wait for the 4th movie, coming this fall ... haven't checked lately to see if there is a release date available.

Why ut! I didn't realize until this pic that your feet,as far as they may seem,do not reach the ground, no wonder you need a kayak
to travel with!!

I loved that book!!! I read it when I went away with some friends and I just couldn't put it down. I like the way it ties bits from the last books together. :o)

GPV, you're on to me! Those damn feet just won't touch the ground so I'm much more comfortable on water.

Poor Lish. That was no friend at all!

I know what you mean, Yaeli. This one had a lot more history in it so you understand more the motivation of some of the characters. They started this in the last book when Harry found out more about his father and the shabby way he treated some of the other students.

Yellojkt, the first one was quite good. The way it's written isn't ideal for adults, but of course that's not the target audience. But they're still quite entertaining if you'll forgive the plot lapses, silly names, and peculiar approach towards logic therein.

Blogging really gets in the way of my book-reading. I need to get back to it... have about a bazillion in my "to read" pile! (I'm not a big Harry Potter fan, though. Much prefer the Lemony Snicket stuff.)

That's what I hear, Lora but I don't know. I see plenty of potential for stories from Harry's days after school assuming he does go into that magical police thing. And you just know he's eventually destined to be Headmaster at Hogwarts--though of course that might never see print.

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...

Ostrich poop found here

I took these pictures last Fall while visiting the NC Zoo. On the left you can see what appears to be a nice polite ostrich just wandering around. This impression soon turns out to be false when her dowdy tail feathers raise up and reveal a puckered anus. Ewwww! If you look carefully, you can see that she's made a deposit on the ground. More ewwww! Feel free to click on the image to make them bigger. Details can make all the difference in these shots. In other matters, aren't those really bony legs they have? And couldn't they have a little more color?
