my new (used) buffet table

Image
This is the buffet table that I mentioned in my post yesterday. I bought it on my way home from work on Friday at a used furniture store. I polished it up last night and while definitely not new, it's not bad at all. Especially for the price--which is a critical factor for me. While not poor, I'm not wandering the streets of Georgetown dropping thousands on shoes either. While I've lived here at my house for almost 2 years now--and that means my ARM is about to pop up 1%--due to some interesting situations I've not been able to furnish the house fully. So this summer I've been gradually adding inexpensive pieces to give the house a more home-like atmosphere. This buffet really helps the living room a lot! I like the somewhat dark color of the piece and while it's not high quality it is fairly heavy and substantial. A lot better than picking up some new but cheap piece at a box-lot type store. And it gave me a reason to break out the wood polish again. :-) Not m...

On my way home...

Image
On my way home from work today I stopped at a used furniture shop. A few weeks ago I got several items there so I decided to try my luck again. This time I spent about the same amount but only got one item. I'll post a picture once I get it cleaned up. When Lyle--the owner--and I were carrying the buffet out to my truck I noticed a lovely spider . It was just wrapping up a meal and I commented on how pretty it was. Lyle had been watching it during the day and said the meal was a beetle that had been caught just a few minutes before. Spiders wrap fast ! In any case, here's the beaut that I photographed once the buffet was in the bed of my truck.

Requiem for New Orleans

Liz over at Library Tavern had some of the lyrics to Guthrie's "City of New Orleans" on a Thursday post and I was surprised at how right the melancholy song felt in the context of Hurricane Katrina. Tonight on the news I listened to a municipal city planner discuss the future of New Orleans and she didn't seem to think it'd be a huge problem to return the city to being a viable living space once again. She did however qualify her words with the observation that city planners in general, and herself specifically, were by nature very optimistic. Well, I'm not optimistic . This might well be the death knell for New Orleans . It's been a long time since a city has been abandoned here in the US but the time might have arrived once again. It's a scary thought to contemplate since so many hopes, dreams, and money are tied up in any living space--and New Orleans has overtones on a number of levels that raises it above being a mere city. It's an iconic pre...

A Doggie top 10 list

Here's a list I lifted from Machelle at Quality Weenie . She has a lot of posts about dogs and cars. She's just outside Detroit so that might explain the car posts. Top 10 Dog Peeves About Humans 10. Blaming your farts on me... not funny... not funny at all!!! 9. Yelling at me for barking: I'M A FRIGGIN' DOG, YOU IDIOT! 8. Taking me for a walk, then not letting me check stuff out. Exactly whose walk is this anyway? 7. Any trick that involves balancing food on my nose... stop it! 6. Any haircut that involves bows or ribbons. Now you know why we chew your stuff up when you're not home. 5. The sleight of hand, fake fetch throw. You fooled a dog! Whoo hooo! What a proud moment for the top of the food chain. 4. Taking me to the vet for "the big snip", then acting surprised when I freak out every time we go back! 3. Getting upset when I sniff the crotches of your guests. Sorry, but haven't quite mastered that handshake thing yet. 2. Dog sweaters. He...

Caution: NUDE SPIDERS within

Image
I'm thinking of starting a money making endeavor here. This is going to be insect porn. You ask, who in Hell would pay good money for pictures of naked bugs? Well, that does seem like a good question but I ask you this: In a world where people pay to hear Celine Dion assault their ears, is there any limit to silliness? ...and with talent like this in my studio, how could I go wrong? Just look at those legs strut their hairy stuff. What warm blooded--and those cold blooded Goths too--boy wouldn't want to get to know this beauty better? Now I admit the size problem does exist. It's hard to cohabitate with a critter that's only a couple of inches across--but love knows no limits--or at least Hallmark says so! In case anyone is still reading this: DO NOT TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!! This is a bug. (actually it's a spider which is in Araneidae). Maybe a type of Orb Web Spider . This is not an object of affection! LOL I do like this picture though. It reminds me of a crab an...

My Deck

Image
. . For some reason this plant loves my deck. . It visits every year, but not early. It never seems to really get going until mid-July. But once it starts growing.... . Look out! It just goes crazy! . . It's really pretty and so vibrant but it's so fast growing that it'll often grow right in through the support arms for my awning. It's nearly as bad as KUDZU! Heaven forbid. . . . . . This is how it looks from where I sit on my deck. This is in the back of my house. It's just on the one side but I might get cuttings and put up an arbor to grow it on. I'd have to have something that would grow early in the year also else the arbor would look barren until July--and I don't want that. Any suggestions? . . . . . . This is the outside of my deck near the driveway. You can see one of the support arms for my awning. The awning makes it a lot more pleasant to be outside when it's really hot and sunny in the Summer. Some iced tea, cookies and a book. Great way...
