Superbowl

Congratulations to Pittsburgh. The Steelers certainly ended the first half in grand fashion. Then, after having held the lead for almost the entire game, it looked like they were going to be beaten with less than 4 minutes on the clock. Yet they came back in the last minute to steal (Steel?) the game from the hard luck Arizona Cardinals. There were too many game affecting penalties in the game but just watching that 100 yard interception run (#92 James Harrison), by a linebacker of all people, made seeing the game worthwhile. Having the back-and-forth dynamics at the end of the game was just a bonus. A big bonus. And thank god 'cause there certainly weren't many commercials worth watching this year. I liked the first half of the Scottish immigrant Budweiser commercial (Clydesdales Generations) but then it dissolved into their typical saccharine "dogs and horses" shit. My favorite commercial was Alec Baldwin's one for Hulu.com where he pretended to be an alien --...

Congratulations New York

I was definitely in the NY camp for the 42nd Super Bowl but never really thought the Giants stood much of a chance. The Patriots were just so strong. But the NY defense was up to the challenge and held New England to only one touchdown for most of the game. And while a mostly defensive game isn't the most interesting game to watch, it did allow for New York to hold on and then make an amazing finish with Plaxico Burress catching Eli Manning's final pass with less than a minute left in the game. While I was really hoping that NY would win the game, I was sure that final drive would end in failure. I was very happy to be wrong! Now that we've finished the obligatory chit-chat about the game, what about the commercials? For the third year in a row I was very disappointed. There were only 4 that I liked and one was solely due to the special effects: the Sobe lifewater one with the dancing lizards was stunning in high def. I don't know if it worked as well on regular tv but ...

Vegetarian

I've been on this no animal parts or pieces diet for 5 days now. It's not as easy as I was expecting. Just on Sunday I had at least 5 incidents when I couldn't eat something that hadn't initially occurred to me as being forbidden. The worst was when I was going to eat some malted milk balls--but the name gave away the problem there--but that led me to the obvious thought that MILK CHOCOLATE was also not on my menu for February. That was an ugly thought. VERY ugly. Not long after that I gave a bag of cheese puffs to my girlfriend to take home with her because I knew it would start calling my name from the cabinet. Those were all obvious foods not to eat that hadn't occurred to me. Less obvious was pancakes. I was thinking they were like pasta, flour and baking soda. Nuh-uh. They have eggs in them. Dammit. At the moment I'm not eating fish or honey either but those are up for review soon. I suspect I'll be having dreams about tuna fish sandwiches soon. Overni...
