Life and the lack thereof

I just read a couple of days ago in TV Guide that the NBC show Life has been canceled at the end of the current season. I found this quite disheartening since Life is one of my favorite shows.

The star of the show, Damian Lewis, is really great as Detective Charlie Crews. Sarah Shahi plays his partner and her acting is certainly up to the task---and my god is she good looking. Did I say that out loud?

In these final few shows there's a replacement partner, played by another beautiful actress, Gabrielle Union, as Shahi's character is working with the FBI on a task force that might be targeting Detective Crews. Wheels within wheels, y'know?

This is only the second season for the show and it just breaks my heart that I won't be seeing a third one. I hope this doesn't happen to my other favorite show, The Mentalist! I don't know if it means anything but both shows are headlined by foreign actors. Lewis is from England and Simon Baker (he plays Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the CBI in The Mentalist) is from Australia.

Frequently when things like this happen we say C'est la Vie which in this case is more than slightly ironic.

Blame Jay Leno. Taking up an hour of prime time each night means there's less room for other dramas. Since the longer a show is on, the more they have to pay the cast, added to the high cost of Jay Leno, it's not surprising that they would eliminate the medium level shows and start anew. It's a shame though, because it's a pretty good show. I'm hoping they resolve it before the end... I hate loose ends.

I currently only watch 4 shows on NBC -- ER, Life, Friday Night Lights (all of which should be gone next season) and The Biggest Loser (mostly because nothing else interests me at 8 pm (and I record The Mentalist at 9).

I think The Mentalist is safe though. CBS has a whole different approach to things. I'm not sure if they were overly confident or refused to have their shows compete, but during February sweeps, CBS showed mostly reruns. It was strange....

I have never see Life, but my son-in-law mentioned it to me recently, saying I ought to watch it. I have seen the Mentalist, but there is something on opposite it that keeps me away. I will watch it in reruns.

Oh no! I really like the show Life! Clever, with the back story of Crews' imprisonment.

I think Life suffers with the same problem as the Mentalist..... something on opposite that it just can't get around.

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. dogs and cancer

Like the old commercials for Fruit Loops, a Kelloggs' breakfast cereal , would say: "A nose, it always knows". While that commercial was referring to Toucan Sam, I'm just using this as a lead in to talk about how sensitive dog noses are and how they can be used, perhaps, to detect cancer. There have been a number of mentions of this in the media recently. Here's two items from CBC news this year. One story that ran on 60 Minutes and another from the Early Show . Both of these stories refer to a study run by Dr. Bob Gordon of the Scripts Clinic in La Jolla which used urine samples of cancer patients and healthy people to determine how well dogs could detect differences in odor between the two. That study resulted in the conclusion that a trained dog could detect cancer to a degree that was 3 times greater than could be accounted for by mere chance. Pretty good but not great. ankle update

S ince a few people object to seeing my feet --poor misdirected souls--I have the two pictures below hidden behind links. Behold them at your own risk! *evil laugh* Actually they're not scary though the first one is a little colorful. T he first picture shows my ankle and foot from the side, as labeled. You can see a lot of general edema of the entire foot. There's also a good bit of discoloration of the ankle area and to a lesser degree the top of the foot all the way down to the toes. The side view is a lot worse in this regard than the top view. T he second picture shows the two feet from the top so you can compare the somewhat normal looking right foot to the injured left foot. There's not much abnormal color on this view but you can see the "sausage like" swelling of the left foot. It's this swelling that is causing my main problem--I can't get the foot into my boots and I need the boots to support the ankle. Damn Catch-22. Side view, looking inward ...
