My Weekend

I was more productive than usual this weekend. First off, I did a lot of cleaning and tidying around the house in prep for leaving the house for a week or so at Christmas.

I don't know why people tend to clean when they're about to leave for a while---you'd think it'd be more important while you're there---but everyone seems to do it. I guess it's like washing the car before a big trip. While I don't do that, I know a lot of people who do---and the damn car is just going to get dirty while driving so by the time you arrive, it looks just like it did before you started on the trip. Go figure.

I also went hiking with Julie on Sunday. We did that hike along Morgan Creek with all the sewer pipe crossings. That's Julie waving at the camera on top of one of the pipes. It was a great day for the hike despite the wet conditions---it was raining pretty hard on Saturday---and slightly cold temperatures. Between the sun and the fresh scrubbed creek banks everything looked quite nice and I took lots of pictures.

After hiking we hit the Flying Burrito, a Mexican restaurant, for lunch and for Tapas we had these large marinated sea scallops that tasted wonderful. The sweet potato fries, served with apple butter, were pretty good too. The burrito? Don't ask! And later that day when I got home I watched Chaos Theory, a DVD I checked out of the library, and while slightly flawed, I really enjoyed the movie. It received a score of 7 out of 10 on IMDB but was roasted on Rotten Tomatoes. Oh well, it's not the first bad movie that I've liked!

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer as Frank and Susan Allen with a strong assist from Stuart Townsend as their best friend. Of course I payed more attention to Constance Zimmer and Sarah Chalke 'cause I think they're both adorable.

Aren't these cookies pretty? Julie's daughter made a huge batch of them as holiday gifts and Julie brought me a plate of them. They don't just have good looks going for them either--they're shortbread and very tasty.

Speaking of movies that aren't to everyone's taste, I saw Elf again on Saturday night. The woman that invited me to go dancing at The Open Eye Cafe last week struck again. This time we watched Elf on television, having some wine---Cabernet Sauvignon for her and a Spumante for me---while waiting for 10pm to come around when a band was going to be playing in Carrboro. As it turned out, she was too pooped to party and called it an early night but it was a lot of fun just talking during the commercials.

Later that night I watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the Indy Jones movie that came out earlier this year. It was... okay. Not as bad as I thought it would be. They handled the age thing well and they FINALLY brought back Karen Allen. I loved Allen in the first movie and every actress they've used as a costar since has stunk. Especially Kate Capshaw, Spielberg's wife. PU!

Karen Allen was born in 1951, apparently a very good year for women. What a face.
