television and TAR

I got 6 hours sleep last night. Finally. The last time I had more than 4 hours sleep was on Saturday and I really needed it. I might have to ask my doctor for some sleep drugs when I go to see her again in December.

I watched the first episode of The Mentalist last night. It was... interesting. I don't know if I liked it or not, I'm a little on the fence about that show. I'll watch one or two more episodes before deciding. On the other hand, two days ago I watched the first two episodes of this season's House and I really liked them a lot. The Wilson-House drama is playing out well and the new character, a private detective, works well with House.

Upcoming is some good stuff on the tube. Actually, it's not a tube anymore is it? Good stuff on the LCD sounds odd tho. In any case, on Sunday is the season opener of my favorite reality show, The Amazing Race. Here's some info from Wiki:

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bertram van Munster revealed that filming for the The Amazing Race 13 lasted for 23 days and covered nearly 40,000 miles. The season spanned five continents, and visited some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Bolivia (La Paz), Kazakhstan, and Cambodia (Angkor Wat). Brazil, Russia (Moscow), and India were also listed as race destinations.

It's been about 9 months since the last episode of TAR aired on television which might be the longest gap since the show first aired in September 2001, just a week before the Trade Towers came down on 9/11. As much as I like the show, I don't think they've ever equaled that first season. They had a lot of very nice contestants in that first race. Nancy & Emily in particular. Hi Nancy! (that was the Mom)

...and on Monday two NBC shows start their second seasons--hopefully they will avoid the Sophomore Jinx--and will bracket Heroes. Chuck appears at 8pm and Life at 10pm. That's a very good night of television on NBC. I hope Life gets a bigger share of the audience this time around. With Heroes as a lead-in it should stand an excellent chance of gaining a wider audience.

I'm also looking forward to TAR. It seems to be the step-child of reality shows though... I think there was a lull somewhere around season 5 or 6 where it was practically dead and then it won the Emmy -- and keeps on winning. Yay! I imagine the show is a expensive to produce and a logistic nightmare. Worth every penny and headache though.

Season One wasn't my favorite but I can understand it's appeal. It was the first and no one knew what they were doing. Now, sometimes it looks like professionals are doing it... they have everything planned more than in earlier races. The same thing happens in production. I actually miss the days when you'd come back for the next episode and find out that someone was penalized during the previous leg and it's all different. LOL

I'm glad you got some sleep, Dave. Finally. Say no to drugs though!

Nitroflex at home

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Surprisingly, this kit didn't require any extra tools. There were two allen keys and one combo wrench included in the boxes and that was all it took to put it together. flea!

Yep, that's one of those damn blood suckers. Renee's revenge on my neglecting her feelings, no doubt. We guys just have it so tough! LOL This here is a picture of my ankle and while it's not very obvious, I guess, there's a bunch of flea bites on there. Itches a bit, dammit. The annoying part is that the damn fleas can't use my blood--fleas are mostly species specific and don't have the proper enzymes to make meals out of blood from other critters--so they're not getting anything out of biting me. It's just frustration and starvation driving their biting. Well, I guess the real annoying part is the bites themselves, but I wanted to seem a little sensitive there for a moment. But no more of that. Kill the fleas! While most of the bites are on my ankles and calves, there's an occasional bite up higher like these 4 on my thigh. They're kinda hard to see through the hair but I wasn't able to focus on the skin with all the hair in the way. Sorry.

ankles: the sequel

I've heard rumors that one post about my sprained ankle wasn't enough so here's more pictures to satisfy a public hungry for swollen flesh... This was taken the morning after I sprained the ankle. There's starting to be a black and blue mark from the blood vessels leaking At this point the swelling is still very localized to the lateral side of the left ankle and presumably that's the tendon that was affected (very likely since I really screwed it up 15 years ago and it's got extra play in it) In this picture, taken on Sunday evening about 25 hours after the injury, you can see the edema, or swelling, has spread out over the top and entire lateral side of the foot. There's also more evidence of hematoma at the skin above the metatarsals. At the same time, there's still significant swelling at the original site to the point that it totally eclipses the left ankle.
