The Bourne Ultimatum

I saw The Bourne Ultimatum earlier today with my girlfriend. She liked it more than me but we both thought it was very good. I still like the first movie the best but I admit this was a worthy sequel, and while Ludlum only wrote 3 Bourne novels--I'm not counting the ones completed by Lustbader--it's obvious that the creative team behind these movies fully intend to do at least one more. And that's an entirely good thing since all three movies so far are way above average.

Over on the Rotten Tomatoes site, The Bourne Ultimatum garnered a 94% rating from the critics and 92% rating by the folk visiting the site. Those are impressive numbers and this movie deserves them.

This movie takes up right where the second one, The Bourne Supremacy (2004), left off. Chris and I watched the first two movies on DVD Saturday and I'm glad we did. It really helps to have recently seen the second movie when watching this new one. In this installment Jason Bourne is still mourning the loss of his romantic partner, Marie Helena Kreutz, as played by the quirkily attractive Franka Potente, which drives much of the action in this movie. The other half of the action is due to a cover up that reaches to the top levels of America's covert operations. Sparks do fly!

Much of the talk about the film focuses on the hand-to-hand fight scene in Tangiers, but my favorite scenes were when Bourne was either outsmarting the people hunting him down, or outflanking them.

One good thing about Bourne losing Marie Kreutz is that it allows Julia Stiles, who plays Nicky Parsons in all 3 Bourne films, more screen time. This time Stiles helps Bourne for reasons that are only hinted at. Perhaps in the next film more background on this will be forthcoming? But while I really like Stiles, Franka Potente is a more interesting actress and her role had more depth. Too bad they killed her off.

I read the first book, but I don't think I've read the others - and I know I haven't seen the movies. But this one is getting such good reviews that I think I'll rent the ftrst 2 and see the third in the theater.

I have read all the Bourne books. I have read a lot of Ludlums stuff.

We liked all the movies to date.

Dh and I watched Babel over the weekend. We hated it!!!

I really liked this movie, but the movie franchise is very different in plot from the novels. The novels are definitely worth reading just to experience the differences.
