harry potter and the deathly hallows

Today at 20 minutes after noon, just as I finished mowing the first half of my lawn, the postman rolled up in his SUV and delivered the new Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I bought it from Amazon.com, as you can see from that picture to the left. I like how they customized their shipping cartons to go with the book.

Each side had something different with the back being the most elaborate. While my copy wasn't really delivered by an owl, it's nice having a picture of one on the box.

I was quite surprised to get the book today since I didn't pay any extra for the shipping. I bought the book back around 8 months ago and they reduced the price twice since then and charged me the lowest offered price. Pretty damn nice. Low price, free shipping, and no damn lines. LOL


And here's what the pretty little book looks like. Nice artwork, huh?

At 759 pages on good stock the book weighs quite a bit. It's a good thing the postman for my area has a SUV. According to him, the post office is ignoring their normal policies in delivering and they're hand delivering the books to locations that are usually only served by mail drop at the road. Nice to know that the Potter magic works on government employees too!

PS Mice weren't chewing on the book. The ragged edge is due to my having trouble tracing the bookcover in Photoshop with my trackball.

Well I guess you have some reading to do! 759 pages! I thought about going down to my local Borders last night... It was a coin toss between bed and the bookstore. Bed won.

It's a blitz and a glut of Harry Potter out there. Our little bookstore in town had a party to celebrate. I'm sort of stuck in Heman and Hobbits...the stuff my sons liked when they were young. Do you think Michele has read Harry Potter?

Hello Utenzi,

Allow me to echo Mr. Althouse and say, "I guess you have some reading to do!"

Yesterday evening I went with a friend and her two daughters, to observe the Harry Potter celebration at a bookstore near us. I have not read any of the books, but the excitement surrounding this launch is something I do celebrate.

The packaging is, indeed, very nice and I love the graphics.

So tell me, why are you online when you could be following the adventures of Harry?

Hi Michele! I probably won't get around to reading the new Potter book for a few weeks. I'm reading one of Jared Diamond's anthropology books right now and after that I'll read the 6th Potter book to remind me of what's going on--then I'll tackle the new one.

How fasr into it are you? (lol)

You know I have never read any of the books or seen any of the films...I know, I'm weird...But, then that is not a new bit of information!
I LOVE that this book, and this series, has made serious readers of so very many people who might not have been....The lines at the Bookstores...WONDERFUL!

Happy for the Harry Potter book. Can't honestly say that I have been bitten by the HP thing yet, though... for any of the books for that matter. However, I will say that I looked at the pic of your house and wow... lovely place in immaculate condition. I'm jealous... I live in a big highrise... nothing as sweet as your home. Michele sent me but I am not sending my wife here, because if she saw your house, she'd want one. Have a great weekend.

That's pretty fast service! My daughter headed to the bookstore for hers (being in NZ the release time was a very polite 11a.m.) and she has already read it twice. Apparently it was actually available on the internet before release, if you knew where to look. So she read it then, and then read it again as soon as she got the book. It's strange that she's a big fan and yet can still criticize the slow plots, plodding prose etc. I read most of the first one and stopped there, they don't quite do it for me. I hope you enjoy it, though.

I agree with your daughter, Catherine. The Potter books have a lot of flaws which makes the International Phenomena of them so odd, but odd in a good way. The love of books isn't something I'll argue with!

I've read all the books and have liked them more and more as the series progresses. However, each and every one of them could easily be edited down to half the length. Rowling does love to hear her own voice! LOL

Lines?? We just walked into Borders and got our copy!!!

And, Borders had a special that if you pre-ordered by midnight Thursday, you got a free owl! I asked the manager if there were any spare as I forgot to pre-order, and I got one as well!!!

Utenzi, will not be reading it for a few weeks, after all, he is reading one of Jared Diamond's anthropology books right now. Then, he will read the 6th Potter, simply as a refresher. Then, and only then, will he begin the new one.

Note to Utenzi:

Have you read the book "Collapse"? That is one of my favourite Diamond books. Hmm, you didn't think I read his books, did you? C'mon you can admit it.

Apparently the Childline Charity here in the UK (a help phoneline created to help abused and distressed children) are laying on extra staff to cope with the distress expected over the death of familiar characters - I mean, puhlease........

I also received my copy via Amazon. Several us at ComedySportz had our copies with us on Saturday evening, but when we went to dinner, we were seated in a place where it was too dark to read.

I stayed up til 6AM to finish it...

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd purchased off of Craig's List an exercise machine. A Nitroflex, to be more specific, for the grand sum of $75. The boxes you see to the left were bought by the seller as discontinued merchandise over a year ago and stored in his back yard storage shed. You might be able to see some of the bugs and such that had made their homes on these boxes. I left them out on my deck for a few days before opening them to allow the insects to leave gracefully or die in the sun. The picture to the left is the pieces from the box, unboxed, and up in one of my upstairs bedrooms. For the most part it wasn't difficult to move it around though two pieces were heavy and a number of them were kinda long and bulky to be wandering about the house with. Yep, that's one of those damn blood suckers. Renee's revenge on my neglecting her feelings, no doubt. We guys just have it so tough! LOL This here is a picture of my ankle and while it's not very obvious, I guess, there's a bunch of flea bites on there. Itches a bit, dammit. The annoying part is that the damn fleas can't use my blood--fleas are mostly species specific and don't have the proper enzymes to make meals out of blood from other critters--so they're not getting anything out of biting me. It's just frustration and starvation driving their biting. Well, I guess the real annoying part is the bites themselves, but I wanted to seem a little sensitive there for a moment. But no more of that. Kill the fleas! While most of the bites are on my ankles and calves, there's an occasional bite up higher like these 4 on my thigh. They're kinda hard to see through the hair but I wasn't able to focus on the skin with all the hair in the way. Sorry.

ankles: the sequel

I've heard rumors that one post about my sprained ankle wasn't enough so here's more pictures to satisfy a public hungry for swollen flesh... This was taken the morning after I sprained the ankle. There's starting to be a black and blue mark from the blood vessels leaking At this point the swelling is still very localized to the lateral side of the left ankle and presumably that's the tendon that was affected (very likely since I really screwed it up 15 years ago and it's got extra play in it) In this picture, taken on Sunday evening about 25 hours after the injury, you can see the edema, or swelling, has spread out over the top and entire lateral side of the foot. There's also more evidence of hematoma at the skin above the metatarsals. At the same time, there's still significant swelling at the original site to the point that it totally eclipses the left ankle.
