a walk across UNC

Yesterday Ren and I walked across the UNC campus, which she once attended, and took in the sights. Since the kids are still on Winter Break it was pretty quiet.

To the left is a picture of an old goat. It seems an odd statue to have around but according to Ren it's actually a male sheep (who would pick a sheep for a team mascot???), not a goat. That's the football stadium that you can see behind the goat Ram.

The picture below is from the Arboretium. It's a Chinese Fir and was quite striking. I'm afraid the picture just doesn't do the tree justice. Sorry, tree--I tried.

These next two pictures are of Ren and I at The Old Well, which is a landmark at UNC. I'm the one with the camera bag on my back. :-)

This last picture is here due to Carmi. He likes to post pictures of grungy industrial looking pictures so here's an example of that sort from UNC. It's the air treatment plant behind the hospital at UNC. The Belltower, another famous landmark, is just 100 yards to the side of this and a lot prettier but you only get to see the nasty pipes of the industrial plant. Ha!

This is the last day of the year 2006 and the only plans I have are to cook a Boston Butt in my crockpot--it's about 3 lbs so it'll take a good 6 hours on high--along with a few side dishes and to watch the Carolina game on Fox at 3pm. They're going up against Dayton and should win easily. The pork should be finished cooking right when the game ends and then it'll be time to eat!

Happy New Year everyone!

The Chapel Hill campus is very beautiful and there are a lot of great places to eat right near campus. Great pictures.

Here via Michele... I'm a farm girl and I thought the ram looked like a goat.

I'm sitting here alone in a coffee shop with an ear-to-ear grin as the other customers around me wonder why I look like this. You've made my day, Dave: when I write or shoot, I always say that if I reach one person, I've succeeded. Thank you for confirming that the crazy stuff that I do has some benefit.

I'm far from home, and pulling in some pictures that will only continue the zaniness in 2007. I'm so glad I'll continue to be able to share all this stuff with you in the year to come.
Thanks for the photos. College campuses are some of the most interesting places to walk around. I hear that UNC is very nice. Enjoy your Boston Butt (which I need to go look up, as I am not aware) and your game (during which I will watch the Jets keeping their playoff hopes alive.) Happy new year!

My daughter went to a small school in Mississippi through tenth grade.... they were the Immanuel Rams.... then she transferred to the Math and Science school like the one they have on Duke campus... there they were the Waves... I thought Rams were better than Waves.

Happy New Year!

Have a fabulous New Year. The weather sucks today and we have no babysitter so we're just going to eat all the junk food out of the cabinets, watch tv (there's a twilight zone marathon on the scifi channel going on) and stay up past our bedtimes!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Funny you should post this: mr. kenju and his brother were in Chapel Hill yesterday too, and they walked the campus. Maybe you saw them and didn't know it....LOL. I was at Duke, delivering wedding flowers.

I hope you and Ren have a Happy New Year, Dave.

Love the pipes....not that the other photos are at all unsatisfying, but the pipes are just really cool.

Should have been asleep - WAS asleep - three hours ago. Woke cuz the heat was on too high.

Wanted to wish you a Happy New Year. I resolve to use my camera more, and better.

OOhhh! that is so weird! That last picture brought back the oddest memory for me! I used to do Greatful Dead shows when my oldest was my only & only 3 or 4 years old & we were there, She I walked right by those pipes looking for a phone & it crossed my mind that it would be a really cool picture, but I didn't have a camera with me at the time.
