Toby and Marketing

A long time ago, back when I lived in Georgia, I earned an MBA. My favorite classes were the marketing ones. Even now there's few things I appreciate more than a good marketing campaign. The reason I bring this up is that I just recently became aware that the Save Toby website was sold to Bored.com. I'd not advise anyone to go to Bored.com --due to the pop-ups-- unless you're really bored!

I was first aware of Save Toby about 18 months ago at which time it'd already been up for about 6 months. I thought it was quite inventive and hilarious though supposedly some people found it objectionable. I guess they must have thought the fellow was serious--which shows how much of sense of humor those folk had. Of course another issue is how some people get up in arms about how you can't kill a rabbit then they go out and eat a hamburger. LOL But I digress....

As a marketing effort it was great. The site was mentioned in many online resources and even on national newscasts for a while. While the blog's operator didn't make a lot of money directly from the Save Toby Drive, I'm sure the experience on his resume was invaluable. And of course Toby stayed out of the stew pot.

I loved the customized recipes on the Toby site. Like:

Toby Stew

* 1 three pound Toby
* 6 small onions, chopped
* 1 bay leaf
* ½ cup chopped celery
* 2 tsp. salt
* 2 cups diced carrots
* 3 raw potatoes, cut up
* 3 tbs. flour
* 1 tbs. chopped parsley

Clean Toby and soak in salted water. This is called brining and it makes Toby nice and tender. Drain, disjoint it in pieces for serving and place in a large kettle with onions, bay leaf, celery and salt. Cover with cold water and cook slowly until tender, about two hours. Add chopped carrots and potatoes and continue cooking until these vegetables are done. Smooth flour with a little cold water and add slowly. When thickened, add chopped parsley and serve.

The poor bunny! You wouldn't really cook him, would you?

Dave, you are too funny (about the man with his legs spread). I didn't show it, but over the door next to him, there is an old saw of my dad's. If he gets too frisky, I'll saw off his legs - how's that?

Reminds me of a modern-day incarnation of Larry the Lobster.

Thanks for sharing this, Utenzi. Now I have some fun reading to look forward to.

I'll stay away from making it in my kitchen, however. Not kosher.

genius.

there's something about cellophane wrap and supermarket shelves that makes people forget that the bulk of their dinner had a pulse at least a couple of weeks ago. unless you shop at wal*mart... in which case the deceased is a faint memory on the ranch.

here via michele today, ute.
