Hell's Kitchen

The final 2 hour episode was on Monday night, at least here in the US, but I didn't want to post about it too soon since some readers might not have seen it yet.

If you've not seen it and want to be surprised--STOP READING!

Like I mentioned a few days ago, I really liked the story arc this season. Because Chef Ramsay is such a dick I didn't watch the entire season last year but I'm glad I stuck it out this time. The show is quite impressive in that it shows how much improvement these people make in the course of one season--at least some of them improve.

This last episode pitted the two final contestants, Heather and Virginia, against one another using the eliminated contestants as their cooks. It was quickly apparent that there was a very good reason some of those people had been eliminated! Of course that's part of what made it a very good elimination battle as well as good theatre. Since the point of the show is to select an executive chef, skills at delegation, leadership and making good decisions are critical. It was quickly obvious which of the two was better at these--and that's no surprise since it was obvious ever since Chef Ramsay switched Heather over to the blue team many weeks ago.

Virginia is probably the better chef since she has greater natural skills but over and over she showed herself to have little in the way of leadership. I was quite happy when Heather won first place. I hope she has great success at the Red Rocks restaurant, T-Bones Chophouse and Lounge, that she now runs. It'll be interesting to note if she's able to hold onto the postion longterm. She's only 25 and very inexperienced to be running a restaurant at that level but I'm sure there's a lot of people rooting for her. I'm certainly one of them.

On a different note, it was funny to see Chef Ramsay's final statement to the audience of the show: Fuck you all. Normally I'd be slightly taken aback by such a thing, even with the f-word blanked out, but from Ramsay it was so in character that it was just funny. Only on FOX.
