5 Things About My Life That I Never Thought I'd Have or Experience Back When I Was 25.

9 days ago Shephard tagged me with this meme. I admit I've been a wee big slow in taking it on but I've finally written it up. Thanks, Shephard!

I've got a few years on Shephard seeing as he's 43 and I'm 46 but we're both a good bit younger than Naomi who tagged Shephard. She turned 70 a few months ago.

When I was 25 I was in grad school at UGA working on a PhD in philosophy. By the time I was 27 I'd left the school with a MA instead and went back to work in research biology.

1. Geography is one thing, I guess. I knew I didn't like the snow and cold of upstate NY but it is a bit surprising to find myself still living in the southeast 21 years later.

2. I never thought I'd experience so many ups and downs in the employment area but that's the way things go in academic research. If a grant doesn't get funded, you hit the road looking for a new job.

3. As a kid I had no idea when "old people" complained about their aches and pains just how much they meant it. Getting older hurts! Grrrr. The arthritis thing is especially annoying and so far I've just had a few mild bouts. I'm not looking forward to the "real thing."

4. When I was 25 personal computers weren't in widespread use yet. I find it amazing how pervasive they are now and how what used to be a hobby of mine is now what I do with a good 30% of my work day and at least that much of my time at home. Damn computers.

5. Given what a slow start I had in the area of girls, I'm quite shocked at how many women I've known over the years. The downside of this is how many women have kicked me out the door over the years. You'd think I'd try to improve myself somewhat, wouldn't you?

Bonus1: I am just in love with digital cameras. Even though I had a film SLR for most of my life, I never used it that much. I use my digital cameras more in a typical month than I used my SLR in 20 years.

Bonus2: I can't believe how heavy I am. From the time I was a kid to when I was in my mid-30s I just couldn't gain weight. Being over 200 pounds now is a source of constant amazement for me since I still visualize myself as being so skinny the wind would knock me over. Of course, it'd be nice to have stopped around 185 instead of 215....

Fun reading, Dave. I was skinny until I was 38 years old, and now and then I get a look at myself in a mirror and wonder where that skinny girl went!

I'm quite shocked at the number of women you've known, too ;)

Fun to read! I don't think any of us would have believed the impact computers have had on our lives.

So the candy diet is no longer working???

Ok, Sassy's comment made me laugh!

I'm surprised I didn't think about the computers as well. Such a pervasive and all-encompassing effect they've had. Great list!
