a new fad diet?

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Today was dedicated to basketball not food. As a result some of our food choices might have been selected more for convenience and not good health.

Let's see: I woke up my girlfriend with a diet coke and a few slices of warmed up left-over pizza from the night before. After that I made some toasted garlic bread with cheese on top that we shared--I had Pepsi to drink. Not long after that I finished off some Wise cheese doodles and then we both had some Hershey nuggets while she checked her Email.

As we started watching basketball in the early afternoon I made us some more garlic bread and Ren started working on some shelled peanuts. At half time I made some chicken nuggets with honey mustard on the side. During the game we also managed to down 3 vodka screwdrivers each. Some Oreos to celebrate UNC's win over Michigan State soon followed.

UNC made it to the Sweet 16. They play either Southern Cal or Texas next. Depends on who wins the game tomorrow between those two teams.

The junk food topic reminds me of a song that was a minor hit when I was a kid, say the mid 1970s here in the US. It was by Larry Groce:

"Junk Food Junkie"

You know I love that organic cooking
I always ask for more
And they call me Mr Natural
On down to the health food store
I only eat good sea salt
White sugar don't touch my lips
And my friends is always begging me
To take them on macrobiotic trips
Yes, they are

Oh, but at night I take out my strongbox
That I keep under lock and key
And I take it off to my closet
Where nobody else can see
I open that door so slowly
Take a peek up north and south
Then I pull out a Hostess Twinkie
And I pop it in my mouth

Yeah, in the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

Well, at lunchtime you can always find me
At the Whole Earth Vitamin Bar
Just sucking on my plain white yogurt
From my hand thrown pottery jar
And sippin' a little hand pressed cider
With a carrot stick for dessert
And wiping my face in a natural way
On the sleeve of my peasant shirt
Oh, yeah

Ah, but when that clock strikes midnight
And I'm all by myself
I work that combination on my secret hideaway shelf
And I pull out some Frito corn chips
Dr Pepper and an ole Moon Pie
Then I sit back in glorious expectation
Of a genuine junk food high

Oh yeah, in the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
Oh, but at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

My friends down at the commune
They think I'm pretty neat
Oh, I don't know nothing about arts and crafts
But I give 'em all something to eat
I'm a friend to old Euell Gibbons
And I only eat home grown spice
I got a John Keats autographed Grecian urn
Filled up with my brown rice
Yes, I do

Oh, folks but lately I hae been spotted
With a Big Mac on my breath
Stumbling into a Colonel Sanders
With a face as white as death
I'm aftraid someday they'll find me
Just stretched out on my bed
With a handful of Pringles potato chips
And a Ding Dong by my head

In the daytime I'm Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I'm a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

You weren't joking about the convenience food, were you?! Mind you, I wasn't much better yesterday either. I had plaice & chips for lunch, and chicken & pineapple with egg fried rice from the Chinese take-away for dinner!

Sometimes it's a necessary fun to be a junk food junkie for a day. I give in to it at least once a ...well, about twice a month, actually!

Here via Michele's.

Some days, you just have to chuck out the government-issued food guide and go with your gut. And if your gut tells you to go with the processed microwaveable stuff because it's quick, easy, and oh-so-delish, then so be it.

I'm right there with you, my friend. Except for the ball part: silly Canadians don't seem to be allowing the broadcasts across the border. At least not on my cable network. Silly Canadians.
Pizza is one of my favorite breakfast foods :)

I'm a junk food junkie but I'm trying to be less of one. It's not easy.

Michele told me to say hello :)

Today we are following your habits. We've both been slugs...we are actually watching Casino Royale now and we've gone thru 2 pizzas, nuts, m and ms, cokes and now coffee with Bailey's....some days are just too hard to be good.

Oh! I love that schedule, Deana. I was planning on getting Casino Royale this week but didn't get around to it. Maybe this week I'll pick it up--and with pizza and some liqueur on the side...perfect!

I must say that NO ONE could accuse the network of poor coverage of this tournament. Almost 24 hour basketball since Friday morning. Have they ever showed this many games before? The women are relegated to the off channels...

Congratulations to UNC! Didn't Duke lose... or is that a figment of my imagination.

Suddenly, my dinner of pan-seared salmon on a bed of baby greens has me feeling virtuous. Of course, I had leftover lasagna for breakfast.

The basketball tournament isn't showing here in the UK but we have rugby at the moment!

I have junk food days too. With my current workload though i am having to be good otherwise everyday could easily turn into junk food day! I do love pizza though!
We all need a junk food day every now and then. And who can turn down a good slice of toasty garlic bread? I'd like one right now in fact!
