One night on an ill lit porch

It was on a night with little moon, when the stars were looking down on Earth in all their celestial glory that I happened upon a bug. Or a leaf. Or a bug-leaf. In any case, I decided to try to make friends.

...unfortunately the bug was either too stuck up or didn't like humans so the friendship was stillborn. Alas.

But as a consolation prize this fine fellow did let me take a few pictures as a momento and to reward him for his hearty fellowship I let him make a new friend in place of me.

However they seemed to get along not at all well. At least not from the bug's perspective. It let out a weird and LOUD noise everytime Bad Penny batted at him. Eventually the bug escaped into that starlit night and out of our lives.....

...the end...

Thanks to both of you. I was quite shocked at how well that second shot came out. Since it was dark, I was shooting blind with my camera. There just wasn't enough light to see what I was shooting--most of my shots didn't even have the bug in the frame.

Beautiful pictures! I'm not sure of the fascination with bugs, but I admire the skill.

Heather Smith identified it for me. It is a bug we studied in school when I was a kid. No wonder it looked so familiar. My memory is really going! It's a katydid of the leaf variety. Order Orthoptera.
So your cat's name is "Bad Penny"? That's cute. I have an orange tabby named Penelope. I can't quite tell from the picture, but Bad Penny looks like an orange tabby with white boots.

Definitely not MY cat, Stacey. I feel that cats are best suited for food. Specifically BBQ. His name isn't Bad Penny, I gave him that nickname because no matter how many times I toss him out the door he always comes back. Just like a bad penny. LOL
Aw that's sweet. That means Bad Penny loves you and likes to come visit you. It seems you've found a friend. Let me guess, neighbor's cat?

And BBQ? I hope not! :P

Girlfriend's cat. I call her DQ though it's mostly to tease her. She's not really a queen. ;-) No comment on the 'D' part.

Hi, here via Michele's! Great pics although I don't think I would have stayed anywhere near that bug to capture the shot :)
